Educators around the country now have on-demand access to high-quality professional development training with the newly-released The Skillful Teacher Series of online instructional videos. The series offers districts easy, real-time access to professional development for K-12 school educators in such critical areas as, among others, how to plan then track student understanding of rigorous lessons, how to motivate students and teach them to exert effective effort, and how to develop a learning environment where all students feel known and supported in their learning. Announced today by Research for Better Teaching, Inc. and Pearson, the first 19 instructional videos in the series are now available from Pearson’s Teacher Compass™ PD, a web-based professional development platform.
Research for Better Teaching (RBT), which provides professional development for educators with a focus on sustainable school improvement, and education services company Pearson collaborated to develop the series that focuses on key strategies for classroom instruction. The videos are narrated by Research for Better Teaching’s founder and president Dr Jon Saphier, who said, “Teacher Compass PD provides a great opportunity for RBT to extend the reach of our expertise to many more teachers across the U.S., and globally. With the increased focus on teacher evaluation tied to effective and skillful teaching, assuring that teachers have access to ways to enhance their skills is critical.”
The Skillful Teacher Series videos showcase key aspects of the Map of Pedagogical Knowledge detailed in The Skillful Teacher: Building Your Teaching Skills(6th ed. 2008, eBook 2010, Saphier et al), which has become the “gold standard” textbook in colleges and school districts across the country for studying generic pedagogy.
Stefan Kohler, who heads up teaching effectiveness at Pearson, said, “High-quality teacher training is a vital element of today’s education landscape, and the integration of RBT’s videos into Teacher Compass PD will help individualize growth and improvement plans for all educators. We are honored to partner with Jon Saphier of RBT to provide evidence-based offerings to help enhance teacher effectiveness in the classroom.”
Teacher Compass PD is a part of Pearson’s Teacher Compass Suite, a comprehensive teaching effectiveness system that engages teachers in ongoing training, reflection, and collaboration. The combined resources in the Teacher Compass Suite create individualized professional development plans for teachers based on observation data, which ties directly to an online library of relevant training content and thousands of videos.
In addition to those mentioned above, other videos in the collection tackle the detailed how-tos of a wide range of topics from constructing effective classroom routines to strategies for teaching students the habits of mind for successful problem-solving. Over the next year, the companies plan to produce and publish additional videos in the series as part of several joint initiatives under development.
