Course Hero Has Donated More Than 6000 Books to Africa Since Establishing The Knowledge Drive Program

“Course Hero at its core is about making high quality education accessible to everyone, so we really felt a connection to Books for Africa’s initiative,” said Andrew Grauer, CEO of Course Hero.

Course Hero, an open learning environment connecting students and teachers around the world, today announced a partnership with Books For Africa, the world’s largest shipper of donated books to Africa. Together with Books For Africa, the Course Hero Knowledge Drive and its student leaders from 20 colleges across the U.S. have already donated over 6,000 books to help children in Africa achieve a better quality of life through education.

“40 percent of school-age children in Africa do not attend school and when they do, many classrooms only have one text book for every 20 students,” said Patrick Plonski, Executive Director of Books For Africa. “We believe that education is the great equalizer in the world, and books are at the foundation of a strong educational system. Through education, we can improve the lives of thousands of children in Africa. We’re proud to partner with Course Hero and their student leaders to help end the cycle of illiteracy in Africa.”

Course Hero established the Knowledge Drive with Books for Africa in November 2010 to raise awareness of illiteracy in Africa and give college students the opportunity to give back to the global community without having to donate money from their limited budgets. As students share study materials through Course Hero’s collaborative learning environment, the company donates one book through Books For Africa on the student’s behalf.

“Course Hero at its core is about making high quality education accessible to everyone, so we really felt a connection to Books for Africa’s initiative,” said Andrew Grauer, CEO of Course Hero. “Through the Knowledge Drive, Course Hero and Books For Africa are making a difference in thousands of children’s lives.”

The Knowledge Drive currently has representatives at 20 U.S. colleges including University of Texas, New York University and the University of Florida. Course Hero plans to expand the program to more than 80 colleges across the country in coming months, with the goal of donating 100,000 books to Africa by year end.
