December 1 marks the end of November, and thus, the end of National Diabetes Awareness Month. But the impact of Diabetes in the United States remains tremendous, having reached epidemic proportions in the last decade. Nearly 26 million Americans are affected by diabetes, and it is increasingly being diagnosed in children and adolescents, the American Diabetes Association reports.

The most common form is diabetes type 2, which plagues 90 to 95 percent of individuals with diabetes. But the onset of diabetes can be prevented or delayed by controlling risk factors, such as obesity, sedentary lifestyle and high blood pressure.

The list of complications associated with Diabetes is long, including heart disease and stroke, non-traumatic lower limb amputations, dental disease, kidney failure, gum disease and nervous system diseases. The majority of those with diabetes suffer from at least one other serious health problem, which is why diabetes prevention is so important to all of us.

In the fight against diabetes, education and awareness is a key step in decreasing its prevalence, and in improving the outcomes and quality of life of those who do suffer from the disease. The natural health community at HealthyAnswers.com has, and will continue to, fight diabetes, covering the latest diabetes findings, treatments, expert suggestions and prevention methods.
