Professional Photographers of America (PPA) announced that it will confer its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award upon Joyce Tenneson, internationally lauded as one of the leading photographers of her generation. The award will be presented to Tenneson during the Award & Degree Ceremony, January 17, 2012, at Imaging USA, the convention and trade show created for professional photographers, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La.

“I am delighted to be honored with PPA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which two of my closest friends, Arnold Newman and Gordon Parks, received as well,” says Tenneson.

PPA presents this award to professional photographers who have made significant lifelong contributions to enriching the profession, and Tenneson has done just that during her decades in the industry. She ranks among the most respected photographers of our time. In fact, in a poll conducted by American Photo Magazine, readers voted her among the 10 most influential women in the history of photography.

“Tenneson possesses a unique vision which makes her photographs immediately recognizable,” writes Vicki Goldberg, critic and author. “Her photographs speak to the fragility of life, its poignant beauty—and its pain. The images are deeply affecting, often evoking forgotten memories.”

The inspiration drawn from her work has led to it being displayed in over 200 exhibitions worldwide, becoming part of numerous private and museum collections, and being published in books and major magazines, such as Time, Life, Newsweek, Premiere, Esquire and The New York Times Magazine. Tenneson is also the author of sixteen books, including the best-seller, “Wise Women,” which was featured in a six-part “Today” show series. In 2008, Bulfinch Press published a retrospective book titled, “Joyce Tenneson: A Life in Photography.”

“Early experimental photographs join signature work and new, unpublished photographs in this four-decade retrospective—the first-ever survey of her hugely influential career,” writes Goldberg of that latest book.

Along with accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at Imaging USA, Tenneson will be signing her “Joyce Tenneson: A Life in Photography” book and presenting an inspirational class (with the same title), sponsored by Canon. In addition, her fine art prints will be showcased in an exhibit at New Orleans’ premier gallery for photography: A Gallery for Fine Photography (241 Chartres Street, New Orleans), during Imaging USA.
