(The author) draws on his experience as a parent, musician, coach and teacher to produce a thought for each day of the calendar.

If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a “magic apple” a day – new ideas – renews the mind with “fruitful thoughts,” notes author Lee Steels. In this new book, he provides sustenance for the mind, offering ideas to mull over to lighten the day. Steels draws on his experience as a parent, musician, coach and teacher to produce a thought for each day of the calendar. He includes a light-hearted story for each sixth day to promote “healing endorphins we all need to keep our equilibrium.”
Each reflection for the day begins with at least one quote as inspiration, ranging from religious leaders to literary figures, politicians and songwriters. For instance, Oct. 29’s reflection on “consistency” leads with, among other things, a quote from Oscar Wilde: “Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative.” The section that follows sheds light on the author’s feelings of consistency – that instead of having negative feelings about consistency, perhaps those quoted were instead asking people to shake old habits and stop living life on autopilot. “Mullings” run the gamut from “procrastination” Jan. 4 to “vodka” Feb. 24, “singing” June 11, “bingo” July 24 and “the greatest gift” Dec. 24.
A short course in Christianity known as Cursillo inspired author Lee Steels to begin studying religion, including daily readers. The movement focuses on showing Christian laymen ways to become more-effective leaders and asks them to share that knowledge back to the world. Steels decided to write his own version of a daily reader when he saw the need for a broader approach than that taken by conservative writers. Steels writes that he hopes readers will find daily mulling “a useful, enjoyable and enlightening experience.”
