Treating patients with sleep-breathing problems is one of the most gratifying aspects of my practice
New York, NY (PRWEB) January 09, 2012
Dr. Daniela Sever, an alumna of Harvard School of Dental Medicine, general dentist in Quincy, MA and member of snoringisntsexy.com was one of the first dentists in the Boston area to introduce the recognition and treatment of snoring and sleep apnea to her dental practice. As a clinical instructor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and professional contributor to medical/dental patient education, she has the opportunity to teach dental students both clinical dentistry and introduce them to dentistry’s responsibility in the field of dental sleep medicine.
Snoring, an early sign of an airway that is not functioning properly during sleep can be the precursor to a more serious condition known as sleep apnea which affects between 20,000,000 and 40,000,000 people of all ages in the United States alone. Apnea is the lack of breath, which results in an acute lack of oxygen and rising levels of carbon dioxide (the gas that carries waste out) in the blood. For some people, cessation of breathing can occur hundreds of times each night. This lack of oxygen can lead to stroke, diabetes, heart attack, heart rate abnormalities, lack of libido or impotence, elevated blood pressure, depression and anxiety, acid reflux, and excessive daytime sleepiness.
In addition to evaluating patients for snoring and sleep apnea (in conjunction with local physicians and sleep specialists) in her practice, Dr. Sever has started an active campaign in Quincy to encourage police and firefighters to get screened for sleep apnea since many suffer from higher than average rates for this disorder.
Recently, Dr. Sever has been invited to present a webinar about dentistry’s responsibility in dental sleep medicine to a group of 300 dentists in the Czech Republic who have enrolled in a continuing education series at the Charles University of Prague.
“Treating patients with sleep-breathing problems is one of the most gratifying aspects of my practice,” said Dr. Sever. “It’s incredible how much one can do to improve the quality of life for my patients. It’s a wonderful feeling when a patient hugs you after completion of treatment.”
Mr. Ben Steffek of Weymouth, MA said “ I didn’t know how badly I felt for years….until Dr. Sever explained the mechanics of sleep and what I can do to help myself. Now I lost 40 lbs. and feel reborn! Dr. Sever understands sleep and how to fix it.”
