A Software Programmer with a Heart

Empowering Education

Gauthaman Thangaraju, a software programmer with a heart, created—an interactive website that teaches children moral lessons as well as essential academic skills.

Gauthaman Thangaraju came to work in the United States as a software programmer, but his path has taken an interesting turn. After starting several software ventures, he began to think about how he could benefit children who need access to educational tools. His knowledge of problems in the educational system in India, in particular, the private education system, spurred him to take action and create

In recent years, private schools in India have increased their fees dramatically, in some cases from as low as $2 per month up to $200 per month. Along with this intolerable increase in fees, Mr. Thangaraju also felt that children in India were not receiving the proper moral education from their schools. He believes that children are the moral pillars of tomorrow’s society, and that they need to be taught how to make clear, well-informed, and morally based decisions. To help children fill in the intellectual and moral gaps in their educations, Gauthaman Thangaraju created—an interactive website that teaches children moral lessons as well as essential academic skills. Locally Made to Benefit Kids Worldwide
Mr. Thangaraju started with a staff of 71 school teachers from Dindugal, Tamil Nadu, a remote village in India. He employed this staff over their summer vacation and asked them to write a series of questions suitable to students from grade 2 to grade 12. These questions cover all major subjects, such as science, math and language, as well as societal issues. When the questions were written and had been reviewed, Mr. Thangaraju then hired computer data-entry operators to enter the hand-written questions into the system he’d designed.

When the questions had all been added, Mr. Thangaraju set about collecting inspiring quotes and videos to make his website even more helpful to students. The result is the interactive educational gaming portal This website provides kids with a place to play educational games with other kids around the world while learning important moral values. These values and moral lessons are presented in a subtle, entertaining way—mostly through jokes, games and quizzes. Kids can learn important social and academic lesson through while being entertained and having a good time.

Gauthaman Thangaraju wanted to involve rural teachers and local staff in a project that would help kids worldwide achieve their academic and moral best. He started this project on his own, and provided all of the funding throughout. Friends have joked with him about the amount of money he’s spent on the project, saying that he could have bought “four Ferraris” with the capital he’s put into However, the satisfaction Mr. Thangaraju derives from his educational portal has nothing to do with money or profits. As the portal becomes more popular and he sees students worldwide spending more and more time on it, Mr. Thangaraju knows that his website is making a difference in children’s lives. This was his goal from the beginning.

No Great Task can be Accomplished Alone
Although Mr. Thangaraju has put in countless hours of his own on, he could not have made the website a success without the help of Sowmyan Narayanan. Mr. Narayanan worked tirelessly to help succeed, and he began working on the project from his dorm room while he was still a student. He has had many successes in his life since then besides making what it is today; Mr. Sowmyan presented a paper to the United Nations in New York at the young age of 21, and he has also been selected as a Team Lead volunteer in the 2012 London Olympics. Gauthaman Thangaraju is forever indebted to Sowmyan Narayanan for his work on and knows that the website could not have found the success it has without Mr. Narayanan’s generous and admirable efforts.

Using his software programming knowledge, Mr. Thangaraju has created an excellent and exciting tool for children worldwide. is free to anyone who visits, and it provides tutorials and instruction in subjects ranging from geography to basic accounting. Whether students are in grade school or heading off to college, can help them learn in the type of positive, morally enriching environment that is rarely seen online. Mr. Thangaraju’s hard work has certainly paid off, and the fun, appealing and easy-to-navigate site he’s designed has the potential to benefit millions of students worldwide.
