Nightlight, Inc. Announces Storage Alternative for Remaining Frozen Embryos

In an effort to assist families with both the expense of storing embryos and the decision to donate those embryos to another person, Fairfax Cryobank and Nightlight®, Inc. have come together to announce a new storage alternative.

Currently in the United States, there are more than 600,000 frozen human embryos in storage. Many families who originally had these embryos created for their in vitro fertilization treatment have now completed their family and are trying to determine what to do with the remaining embryos.

Most of these remaining embryos are stored at fertility clinics throughout the country. The annual expense for storage of these embryos is $600.00, but the cost can be as high as $1,500.00 per year. Annual billing notices for this storage service will begin arriving in mailboxes after the first of the year.

In an effort to assist families with both the expense of storing embryos and the decision to donate those embryos to another person, Fairfax Cryobank and Nightlight®, Inc. have come together to announce a new storage alternative.

Since 1986 Fairfax Cryobank has provided reliable storage for reproductive tissue. With the rapid advances in reproductive medicine, the number of cryopreserved embryos has increased by 54% in the past 10 years. Nightlight, through its Snowflakes® Embryo Adoption Program, offers families with remaining embryos the opportunity to choose a family to donate them to. In November 2011 the 280th Snowflake baby was born through this unique adoption choice.

Now families who have remaining embryos and have chosen to donate them can store the embryos at Fairfax Cryobank for the reduced cost of $350.00 for the first year. This amount includes the cost of shipping the embryos from their current storage facility to Fairfax Cryobank. After the donor family is matched with a recipient adopting family through the Snowflakes program, the embryos will be shipped to the appropriate medical facility at the expense of the adopting family.

Nightlight provides adoption services as a permanent response for children without parents through child advocacy, parent education and lifelong support… because every child deserves a loving family. Based in Fairfax, VA, Fairfax Cryobank is one of the world's largest and most experienced sperm banks, offering exceptional donor sperm, sperm storage and embryo storage services. Fairfax Cryobank meets the highest standards of screening and testing and is fully compliant with all FDA regulations.

Promotion of this program is funded by grant #1EAAPA111020-01-00 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The contents are solely the responsibility of Nightlight, Inc. and do not necessarily represent the official views of the Department.
