With the sports industry ranking as the sixth largest industry in the U.S., a growing number of people are looking to turn their passion for sports into a career. Southern New Hampshire University is increasing access to potential career opportunities in this industry with the recent addition of its new online BS in Sport Management degree program.

The Sport Management program at SNHU has a nearly 25-year history and is approved by the national Sport Management Program Review Council. The university is one of only a handful of universities in the U.S. offering both Sport Management graduate and undergraduate degrees, as well as online and on-campus programs.

Students in the online BS in Sport Management degree program at SNHU are exposed to a wide array of sport management topics, including sports marketing, facility management, revenue generation, ethics and law. A required six-credit sport management internship gives students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in class to a range of sport management settings.

In addition to Sport Management courses, students enrolled in the degree program complete core business courses in accounting, marketing, finance, organizational leadership and economics. In the competitive sport management industry, having business knowledge and expertise can be key to securing a position.

“It is our belief, along with many in the industry, that if you want to earn a degree and work in the business side of sports, it’s important to have a business degree,” says Dr. Douglas Blais, professor and chair of the Sport Management Department. “Our Sport Management degree courses are all business-focused and our students earn a degree from the School of Business, giving our students an advantage compared to students who have Sport Management degrees without a business focus.”

SNHU Sport Management students and program graduates have worked in internships and in full-time career positions for professional and collegiate athletic teams at all levels, as well as sports equipment manufacturers, YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs, and recreation programs.
