Nominations for the 4th Annual Shorty Awards (http://shortyawards.com) have launched to uncover the most influential users in social media. Past winners include Conan O'Brien (@ConanOBrien), Cory Booker (@CoryBooker), Sesame Street's Grover (@SesameStreet), Suze Orman (@SuzeOrman), Ted Leo (@tedleo), Neil Patrick Harris (@ActuallyNPH) and NASA (@NASA).

Last year there were over 750,000 tweeted nominations in the Shorty Awards. For the first time ever users can vote for a presidential candidate on Twitter. For example tweeting, “I nominate (e.g. @MittRomney, @BarackObama, or @RickSantorum) for a #PresidentialCandidate Shorty Award because...,” will register a nomination at http://shortyawards.com/category/presidentialcandidate.

The Real-Time Academy of Short-Form Arts & Sciences, which includes Wikipedia cofounder Jimmy Wales (@jimmy_wales), Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley (@dens), Kurt Andersen (@KBAndersen) and Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano), ultimately decide the winners at the awards gala in NYC.

“With almost a billion people using social media, it’s more important than ever to short list who you need to pay attention to,” said Greg Galant (@gregory), CEO of Sawhorse Media and cocreator of the Shorty Awards.

"The social media explosion all around us means it's more important than ever to highlight the best and most interesting content," said Sree Sreenivasan (@sree), a professor of digital media at Columbia Journalism School (@ColumbiaJourn) and member of the Real-Time Academy. "The Shorty Awards are honoring excellence in a medium that some continue to dismiss, at their peril."

The 4th Annual Shorty Awards will feature dozens of categories to honor individuals in topics that reflect the power social media has had on politics, entertainment, pop culture, activism, government, technology, news, media and more. Some of the highlights include:
