American born long distance runner takes on challenging mountain course of the Brazil 135 as a fundraiser for Light up a Life, a children’s charity benefiting orphans and poor children.

Mike DeNoma is taking on a unique children’s charity fundraiser this month. On January 20, 2012, he and 75 other ultra marathoners will attempt to run 135 miles over two days across the mountains of Brazil in one of the most demanding footraces in the world. DeNoma is running to raise funds for Light up a Life, a Taiwanese children’s charity that helps underprivileged children and orphans. DeNoma, a 55 year old father of six, is a practiced long-distance and endurance runner. But, the Brazil 135 pushes even the most experienced endurance runner to the brink.

It takes place on the Mantiqueira Mountains, part of the Andes Cordillera. From beginning to end, the course takes runners along a 33,000 ft climb and a 29,000 ft descent. Running the Brazil 135 takes runners along a course equivalent to a full ascent and descent of Mount Everest. The course part of Caminho da Fé (Path of Faith or Way of Faith), a path for pilgrims to experience moments of reflection on faith, the integration of man and nature with religion, and confront runners to find the faith to overcome seemingly insurmountable personal challenges. Runners of Brazil 135 must complete the course in the maximum allowable time of 48 hours.
