The Sonic was tested by the new stringent guidelines put into effect for 2011 models called the New Car Assessment Program. This is the tenth General Motors 2012 model with a 5-star safety rating.

The overall score is formed by tests that include the frontal and side crash as well as rollover resistance testing. These three tests combine to form the Overall Vehicle Score. The Chevy Sonic received an overall vehicle score of 5-stars, which is the highest rating possible.

While the Sonic is designed to help drivers avoid crashes, it has many different protection features should there ever be an accident. The body structure of the car incorporates a single welded unit and over 60 percent of the vehicle safety cage consists of high-strength steel. Other safety features included in the Sonic are:

  •     StabiliTrak electronic stability control
  •     Power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes with features
  •     Front safety belt pretensioners
  •     OnStar with Automatic Crash Response
