The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco is a midsize sedan is reported as being a “class-challenging” vehicle that “Brings Flavor to [the] Vanilla Segment,” according to a Chevrolet press release. Expected to appear in showrooms in February or March, the Malibu Eco is filled with amenities sure to satisfy the car enthusiast.

The all-new Malibu Eco is expected to be a leading competitor in the midsize sedan division. Its class-leading ride and handling capabilities are only part of the vehicle’s benefits. According to Motor Trend, “On the road, the electric motor imperceptibly blends in up to 15 horsepower and 79 lb-ft of torque, which, in addition to increasing accelerative power, also smoothes out power delivery and improves throttle response.”

The Malibu Eco’s eAssist system has an electric motor, which replaces the alternator, and provides a power boost to the engine during acceleration and captures braking energy while slowing. The system also performs like a starter during Automatic Start/Stop mode. “It’s a rather clever system that actually operates more smoothly than most full hybrids as there’s no awkward hand-off from full electric mode to gasoline mode,” said Motor Trend. EAssist smoothly restarts the engine, never powering the wheels, and then feeds in excess power during acceleration.

Smooth and quiet, the Malibu Eco’s engine provides fuel economy estimated at 25 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. EAssist makes this all-new vehicle the most fuel-efficient Malibu ever.
