New Book Illustrates the Analytical Method in Structural Analysis

Author Ramon V. Jarquio’s equations that determine the capacity of sections in structural analysis and design

An analytical method that uses the capacity of a section to determine its minimum capacity for biaxial bending as well as provide the reference for equilibrium of external and internal forces has been developed in a new book titled The Analytical Method in Structural Analysis written by Ramon V. Jarquio, P.E.

The analysis shown in this book is solely based on the assumption that any section is subjected to an axial load and a moment, a concept known to every structural engineer as shown in Euler’s differential equation. From this concept, it is possible to determine the capacity of any section.

The author assumes that readers are familiar with basic mathematics. Most of the equations were derived using algebra, analytical geometry, trigonometric identities and differential and integral calculus. Once the equations are derived using integration, Microsoft Excel is used to program these equations. Readers may refer to the spreadsheets or develop their own method. They should also realize that this book is different from the conventional approximations by experts, who tend to copy one another and conform to existing codes of practice worldwide, even in this age of personal computers.

Elucidating an elegant, straightforward, and precise method, and thus limiting guesswork, this book makes it easier to confirm the adequacy and safety of designs by direct comparison of the external loads to the internal capacities of circular and rectangular sections in structural analysis and design.

About the Author
Ramon V. Jarquio is a B.S.C.E. graduate from the Mapua Institute of Technology in the Philippines, a registered P.E. in the state of New York since 1978 and a lifetime member of ASCE. He retired as the Director of Engineering Support of the New York City Transit in 2000. His professional experience includes an assignment in Saudi Arabia as a Bridge Engineer and as the Engineer-in-Charge in the highway development programs for the Ministries of Saudi Arabia and Libya from 1964-1974. Since his retirement, he has authored and presented 26 technical papers at international structural engineering and construction conferences. He had three technical papers published by the ASCE Geotechnical Journals 1980-1983 and one in the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers Structural Journal in 2004. These technical papers illustrate for the first time the analytical method in structural analysis and are now included in his three books. He is one of the founders of the Filipino American Association of Engineers (FAAE) and served as its President from 2000-2001.
