If our ability to prevent and treat heart disease stays where we are right now, costs will triple in 20 years just through demographic changes in the population.

Dr. Paul Heidenreich of the American Heart Association (AHA) paints an alarming picture for the heart health of America in the next 18 years. "If our ability to prevent and treat heart disease stays where we are right now, costs will triple in 20 years just through demographic changes in the population." The AHA has previously stated that walking 10,000 steps per day could reduce the rate of initial heart attacks in the U.S. by 90%. Why the gloom about the future? Americans don’t yet understand the necessity of movement. A Movement Revolution started by TrekDesk Treadmill Desks on Facebook hopes to change that.

“Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. accounting for 17% of our annual health care expenditures,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks. “We walk less than ½ the amount necessary to maintain heart health. Unless we launch initiatives to increase movement the AHA predictions are doomed to occur. TrekDesk’s Movement Revolution is designed to alert the American public that prolonged sitting will make them one of these statistics.”

The impact of inactivity is overwhelming. The cost for heart disease medical care is predicted to rise from $273 billion to $818 billion annually in less than two decades with 40.5% of Americans suffering from some form of heart disease. Lost productivity is estimated to increase from its current $172 billion annually to $276 billion by 2030.

“These predictions are not cast in stone,” noted Bordley, “but it is obvious the time to act is now.”
