Baton Rouge, LA (PRWEB) January 16, 2012
From January 16, 2012 through March 15, 2012 Portwood Dental will combine with several Baton Rouge dentists in an effort to collect food for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. When asked how the program would work in his office on Siegen Lane, Dr. John Portwood, Jr. replied, “Each of our patients will be asked to bring in two items of non-perishable food to contribute. Their names will then be placed in a raffle for a gift basket of Cajun delicacies. It is a no-lose situation for our patients and also for those that need help in Baton Rouge.” When asked why these dentists were getting involved, Dr. Portwood stated, “The main reason that we get into the dental profession is to help others. Dentists are always contributing their time to worthy causes and we felt that this would be an excellent way for us to contribute to those in need.”
The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank was organized to aid in the problem of hunger in the greater Baton Rouge area in the fall of 1984 as an outgrowth of Urban Ministries Coalition. As the organization expands into its 28th year of service to the community, its needs grow yearly as the needy in the community expand.
Mike Manning, president and CEO of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank stated, “People think of those less fortunate, especially during the holidays; however, once the new year comes, their focus shifts to kids back in school and paying for Christmas, while the need in our community continues.”
Participating dentists in the "Take a Bite Out of Hunger" initiative include Dr. John Portwood on Siegen Lane, Dr. Sean Smith, also on Siegen Lane, Drs. Sherman and Balhoff on Bluebonnet Avenue, Dr. Gardner Wade on Bluebonnet Avenue, and Drs. Kogler, Brown, and Rome located on South Burnside Avenue in Gonzales, Louisiana. These dentists are all running their programs separately, but with the common goal of helping the Food Bank.
