Applies 30 years of expertise moving four public libraries in recent months

The moves included careful labeling and control procedures to enable library staff to quickly access collections at project completion. American’s experience comes from more than 30 years of moving law firm and college libraries. In the case of the Ramona Public Library, American was responsible for completely managing the relocation of the public library to newly constructed facilities. Its list of responsibilities included identifying collections, measuring the linear feet of each collection, labeling with a color coding system, determining fill ratios in the new shelving, then mapping and identifying collection locations at the new facility before moving the books and filling the shelving. The project included 3,300 linear feet of books and took just two days to manage and three days to complete. American library carts were utilized in this relocation project.

The Whittier Public Library relocation was planned around the one-year major renovation of the existing library. To complete this project, American was responsible for identifying, labeling then packing 100 percent of the books for long-term storage at American’s facility. Once the books were packed and color coded, they were numerically palletized in order. Every pallet was assigned a control number for sequencing that will allow for orderly reinstallation and quick, easy access to the books and other materials on completion of the project, which is anticipated for November 2012. The Whittier Public Library includes 4,350 linear feet of books and other materials, and the time to move the materials to long-term storage was just 2.5 days.

Not all such moves can be accomplished with long-term planning. In some cases, as happened with Santa Clarita’s Public Library, emergency situations require fast yet still orderly relocation of library collections. American was called to move books out of the Santa Clarita Public Library due to an emergency water intrusion. All of the Santa Clarita Public Library’s books were placed on library carts and transported to American’s Santa Fe Springs storage facility for six weeks while construction and repairs are completed on the library. American was assigned complete project management, including mapping and labeling of the collections prior to packing and moving them to storage. Santa Clarita's public library includes 3,640 linear feet of books, and it took 2.25 days to relocate them to storage.

In July 2010, American moved the Fallbrook Public Library to a temporary location provided by the County of San Diego where it was stored for approximately one year during the library’s renovation. The Fallbrook Public Library’s staff was responsible for labeling and identifying each collection, after American set up the labeling system. American then packed and moved the books, in order, to the temporary storage location. Following the renovation, American moved everything to the newly renovated library then filled shelving per instructions provided by the staff. The Fallbrook Public Library includes 2,050 linear feet of books.

Over the past 30 years, American has worked with many law firms and schools, including moving the libraries of Biola University, Loyola Law School, Mount San Antonio College (Mt. SAC), University of Southern California (USC) and Whittier College.

Library moves require meticulous management to ensure a streamlined relocation process with customized move plans that keep everyone on task and ensure everything remains organized.
