College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) today announced its 2011 D-I FBS & FCS annual and career recipients. USC quarterback Matt Barkley earned the 2011 CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy, while Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke earned the 2011 CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy.
2011 CFPA National Performer of the Year Matt Barkley (41 total touchdowns, two 2-point conversions, 294 passing yards per game) set a single season Pac-12 record with 39 passing touchdowns in twelve games. 2011 CFPA National Defensive Performer of the Year Whitney Mercilus led D-I FBS defenders in sacks (16) and forced fumbles (9). 2011 CFPA Defensive Back Trophy recipient David Amerson led D-I FBS defensive backs in interceptions (13), touchdown returns (2), and return yards (205). 2011 CFPA Kickoff Specialist Trophy recipient Quinn Sharp (114 kickoffs, 61 touchbacks, 68.5 yards per kickoff average) became the first two-time CFPA recipient, earning the award previously in 2009.
2011 CFPA D-I FCS National Performer of the Year Taylor Heinicke (29 total touchdowns, 3.22 touchdowns per game, 7.77 yards per pass attempt, .33% interception rate) completed 25 passing touchdowns with only 1 interception in 307 attempts. Heinicke was responsible for 305.3 total offensive yards per game and added a 64-yard punt in the D-I FCS playoffs that was downed at the opposing four yard line. Heinicke became the first FCS player to earn CFPA National Freshman Performer of the Year, CFPA Quarterback Award, and CFPA National Performer of the Year honors in the same season.
