CapLinked—the online platform that makes investing in private companies easy, secure, and social—announced today that it has raised $1.4 million in funding to date from some of Silicon Valley’s most high profile early-stage investors. Following its public launch last February, CapLinked has grown by over 4,000% as companies and investors flock to its website to network, manage capital raises, and exchange updates.
Newly announced investors in the company include Chris Yeh (vice president at PBworks), Jason Portnoy (Silicon Valley angel and former CFO of Palantir Technologies), Stephan Paternot (chairman of Slated and co-founder of TheGlobe.com), Alexsis de Raadt-St. James (chairman of the Althea Foundation), Lok Lee (managing director of 2L Advisors), and Clark Landry (founder of GraphEffect).
In its brief history, CapLinked has grown to over 95,000 user accounts, 10,000 company profiles, and $12 billion in private investment deals hosted on its site. CapLinked has proven popular in a wide array of industries, including technology, energy, transportation, food & beverage, real estate, and financial services. The company was co-founded by Eric M. Jackson (PayPal's first head of US marketing and author of the book “The PayPal Wars”) and Christopher Grey (formerly a managing director at a subsidiary of Emigrant Bank and a private equity manager involved with $6 billion of investments).
Investors in the company include members of the so-called “PayPal Mafia.” Previously announced investors include Peter Thiel (co-founder of PayPal and the first investor in Facebook), Dave McClure (founding partner of 500 Startups), David Sacks (CEO of Yammer and former COO of PayPal), Joe Lonsdale (co-founder of Palantir Technologies), Aman Verjee (CFO of Sonos), and David Anderson (managing partner of 7th Rig). The company last announced a funding round of $525K in February 2011.
“Investing in private companies has depended on outdated technology for too long,” said CEO Jackson. “Emails loaded with attachments, spreadsheets for tracking leads, and clunky enterprise data rooms are straight out of the 1990s. CapLinked makes the process easier for companies, investors, and their advisors by giving them social tools to connect and share information.”
Companies use CapLinked’s website to manage the previously cumbersome processes of raising money, networking with new prospects, and handling investor relations after the business is funded. Accredited and professional investors use CapLinked to review deals, conduct due diligence, and keep track of their portfolio of private investments. Both sides can also invite their advisors (e.g. lawyers, consultants, board members, etc.) to receive information and review deals.
“Private companies are an important source of job creation and economic growth,” said investor Portnoy, who was previously a vice president at PayPal. “By streamlining the investment process and giving companies new tools to raise capital and sell assets, CapLinked is changing how private investments get made.”
