The London 2012 Olympic Torch has been announced on the longlist for the Design Museum's 'Designs of the Year 2012' award.

Designed by east Londoners Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the Torch has been nominated by industry experts in the Product category of the awards.

Showcasing a year in design, the Design Museum longlist is a celebration of the best in innovative global designs across seven categories, from Fashion to Transport.

Barber and Osgerby won the opportunity to design the Torch – which was unveiled in June 2011 – through a competitive tender run by the London 2012 Organising Committee and the Design Council. The design, engineering and manufacture of their product celebrate the best of British talent, with the triangular-shape inspired by a series of 'threes' that are found in the history of the Olympic Games.

Velodrome nomination

The London 2012 Velodrome, venue for the Track Cycling events this summer, is also up for an award.

Nominated in the Architecture category, the Velodrome is the most sustainable venue in the Olympic Park terms of design and construction. Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy and Team GB were consulted during the design process to ensure it delivers the best possible conditions for athletes.

'Eclectic mix'

The Torch and Velodrome are joined on the list by an eclectic mix of designs, ranging from the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress, a wind-propelled landmine detonator and a pop-up cinema in east London.

All of the nominations will be on show at the Design Museum from 8 February – 15 July 2012. A jury will then select the seven category winners and an overall winner for the Design of the Year 2012, with the results announced on 24 April.
