CouponTrade eliminates the concern of the gift card going unused by allowing the user to sell their gift card and receive up to the full value of their gift card from a buyer.
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) January 16, 2012
With $27.8 billion spent on gift cards during 2011’s holiday season (National Retail Federation), research suggests that 20 percent of these cards will go unspent. CouponTrade.com offered an answer, launching “Sell Your Gift Card Month” to put money back in the hands of consumers and saw a 200 percent influx of users selling gift cards on the site.
Among the reasons of why nearly $20 billion worth of gift cards go unused each year are that the user forgets about the card or monthly inactivity fees are applied. In some cases, the retailer ends up closing before the gift cards can be redeemed. CouponTrade eliminates the concern of the gift card going unused by allowing the user to sell their gift card and receive up to the full value of their gift card from a buyer.
The difference between CouponTrade and other gift card resellers is CouponTrade’s focus on serving sellers as well as buyers. Other online gift card exchange sites give users cash directly for their gift cards, but the cards are purchased at a predetermined rate. Some sites also take up to a week to transfer payment to the seller. Currently, CouponTrade is working on more services and tools to help sellers get paid directly for their gift card sales.
“One of our highest priorities has been to develop new ways of helping users get paid directly for their gift cards,” CEO and founder, George Bousis said. “People want quick cash for their cards and we are on the verge of releasing that by the end of the first quarter.”
When a user’s gift card is sold, 10 percent of the sales price plus an additional transaction fee is deducted from the total sale. An email confirmation and a free prepaid shipping label that requires the seller to ship within 48 hours is also sent.
Users can also buy discounted gift cards at their full value from the site and gain more from gift cards given as gifts.
“A recent statistic (Consumer Reports) also shows that when users redeem their gift cards, 60 percent of consumers spent more than the value of their gift card using their own money,” CouponTrade COO Bradley Wasz said. “So when a user buys a discounted gift card, they are getting free money to spend.”
