He studied the game, learned the rules, at times lost, but, ultimately, he emerged victorious. Now, author Ambrose P. Murtagh unveils the fascinating story of his life as he brings inspiration to readers. In Life is a Game: This is How I Played It, he likens life to the values he learned in sandlot football and shares how he dealt with its ups and downs through these values.

Many coaches have said there are many things you can learn on a football field that you won’t learn in the classroom. On the football field, you learn discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. Murtagh applied these principles in dealing with the most turbulent times of his young life. He practiced these ideals to help him overcome the crippling effects of polio at a time when the disease frequently spelled death or disability. He used them to build himself up and to become an athlete. He grew up during the Great Depression and had to quit high school to help support his family, and while working full time, he completed high school, college, and graduate school at night. For him, defeat was never a consideration; determination to win, pride, and, sometimes, hoping for the occasional “fourth quarter miracle” were the driving forces.

“Win or lose, I never lost my fierce determination to give it my best. The way I applied myself to every game I played as a youth, I applied to challenges I faced later in life,” shares Murtagh.

Deeply inspiring and highly moving, Life is a Game: This is How I Played It is one man’s reflection of what he experienced in the world of sports. It is a striking memoir that will hook readers with its honest and poignant anecdotes about the toughest game of all, LIFE.
