Panama City Beach is preparing to beat the existing World record for the largest bikini parade during Spring Break 2012, according to the Panama City Beach Spring Break website, springbreakfunplace.com. The current World record was set at Surfers Paradise beach, Gold Coast, Australia in October 2011, where 357 women paraded; an attempt which beat the (then current) record of 331 women in the Cayman Islands.

Dan Rowe of the Panama City Beach Tourist Development Council (TDC) hopes to beat the current record during Spring Break 2012. “It’s a way for the students to come down and participate in a fun activity,” according to Rowe. “It is good clean fun.”

The funding for the record attempt comes from a $250,000 portion of a $7 million BP marketing budget. This funding is in addition to the roughly $350,000 that has already been allocated by the TDC for the Panama City Beach Spring Break Marketing Campaign.

Panama City Beach Hotels, attractions, condos, and resorts, like the Sandpiper Beacon Beach Resort, are motivated to explore new avenues to promote the Panama City Beach Spring Break experience. According to Rowe, a World record attempt for a bikini parade fits the desire to do something new for a Spring Break promotion.

News of Panama City Beach’s preparations was initially met with encouragement from the current record holders. Australia’s Gold Coast Tourism boss Martin Winter welcomed the competition, saying it’s good for business, adding, "A bit of friendly competition is always good." Susie Douglas, Surfers beach 2012 mayoral candidate says, "If Panama City Beach beats us we'll just have to do it again and beat them… Bring it on."

The competitive nature of both sides intensified recently, with Australia’s goldcost.com.au website publishing a message stating, “It is time for the Gold Coast’s bikini babes to band together, we are going to war.” Melissa Porcelli, Group Marketing Director of StudentUniverse Media (who are tasked with handling the details of Panama City Beach’s record attempt) teased the Gold Coast in a rebuttal saying, “Bring it on. We look forward to stealing the title. The ‘Land Down Under’ won’t know what it’s like to stay at the top for very long.” Panama City Beach’s emphasis is on breaking the record in a fun, safe and positive light.

To ensure a valid record attempt, the entrants (women only) will have to walk a minimum of one mile, and wear only 2-piece bathing suits. As with any World record attempt, the presence of an official Guinness representative is required in order to verify the number of participants. Panama City Beach expects to hold the record attempt around March 3rd 2012.

The Sandpiper Beacon Beach Resort is a beachfront Hotel located on the west-end of Panama City Beach, Florida. Although a family-friendly hotel and resort all year round, the Sandpiper Beacon also provides a fun and exciting college and high School Spring Break experience.
