Ingram Content Group and Better World Books Launch New Library Return Program That Gives Back

Libraries and Literacy Programs benefit when old books turn into new books

Traditional library supply is changing rapidly and patron needs combined with budget challenges are driving libraries to rethink how content is acquired and funded. Through a new program developed by Ingram Content Group and Better World Books, libraries now have a tool to turn old books into revenue for new content acquisitions through their Ingram library account.

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh was thinking about ways to turn old materials into new sources of acquisition money.

“Ingram’s new program gives Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh an innovative way to generate revenue off of materials that are no longer circulating or needed,” said Tina La Mark, Assistant Director of Technical and Access Services, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. “In a time of tight budgets and evolving patron need, the program gives us a very relevant tool that helps our library and our patrons, while also funding literacy and helping the environment. Having already received our first credit - we couldn’t be more pleased.”    

Founded in 2002, Better World Books sells the surplus books of more than 3,000 libraries and 500 bookstores on a consignment basis. A portion of each book sold funds high-impact literacy projects in the United States and around the world. In the process, Better World Books has generated over $10 million dollars in unrestricted funding for libraries and literacy. Books are sold on and 52 additional channels.

All libraries that work with Ingram can participate in the program, and registering for the service is easy. Better World Books coordinates pick up of surplus materials and lists items for sale. A percentage of each sale is remitted to Ingram and a non-profit literacy agency selected by each library. The proceeds of the sale are credited to individual library accounts by Ingram for use on new materials. Items that do not sell are donated or recycled.    

“Ingram is well-known and respected throughout the library community and we’re pleased that through our collaboration, Ingram library customers and readers nationwide will have additional resources to purchase more materials for their patrons,” said Chris Johnson, Vice President of Better World Books.

Our development of this new revenue tool for libraries will not only help libraries purchase new material that they might not have had funding for in the past, but it will also give material that may have been discarded, a new purpose.”
