Expertise in environmentally friendly TPV helps Jyco seal a global deal for multiple weather sealing systems on 2014 mid-size pick-up trucks

The superior sealing characteristics and green advantages of TPV were important customer considerations from the outset.

Jyco Sealing Technologies announced today that they have been awarded the weathersealing contract for the global introduction of 2014 model year, next-generation mid-size pickup trucks. The contract specifies that the weathersealing systems, which include glass run channel, inner beltstrips and outer beltstrips, will be made with thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV), the environmentally friendlier compound that many OEMs are using to replace traditional EPDM rubber.

“The superior sealing characteristics and green advantages of TPV were important customer considerations from the outset, and the faster cure time of TPV will allow us to keep pace with their JIT production schedule worldwide,” comments Steve Corcoran, Jyco’s lead account manager for the program. Per the customer’s wishes, he did not release the name of the OEM.

Jyco is headquartered in Michigan and has manufacturing plants in Canada, Mexico and China.

Unlike EPDM, TPV (also know as TPE, short for thermoplastic elastomers) is a rubber-plastic compound that can be processed without generating volatile organic compounds or particulate emissions. Scrap is 100% recyclable and directly reprocessable.

“The slightly higher raw material cost of TPV is more than offset by cost savings on the finished part,” explains Corcoran. “With TPV we can simplify fabrication, reduce processing times, replace metal inserts with thermoplastic components, and practically eliminate scrap rates. By the time the dust settles, a finished TPV part typically costs 20% less than its EPDM counterpart.”

According to Jyco, parts made with their proprietary TPV compound, called JyFlex, match or improve sealing performance of rubber parts while reducing the weight of the part as much as 30% to help improve fuel efficiency.

Greener technology is nothing new to Jyco, which has been a pioneer in TPV processing and sealing technology since its founding in 2000. In 2007, the company introduced JyGreen, landmark technology to recycle tires into high performance extruded TPV automotive weatherseal systems. Today Jyco is remains the world leader in TPV sealing, the only supplier to have earned a Corporate TS/ISO/16949/9000 certification for Design, Testing, and Manufacturing of TPV seals.
