Photographer Mitch Epstein and cellist Erik Friedlander have collaborated on a new limited edition LP entitled, American Power. The 500 hand-numbered albums are signed by both artists, and feature 6 new solo cello compositions, gate-fold artwork by Mitch Epstein, as well as a two-sided, 24x36 inch poster of Epstein’s photographs and Friedlander’s handwritten score. Purchase of the 180-gram, audiophile LP is accompanied by a free digital download of the music. The LP will be released on January 22, 2012.

Deluxe LP is released by two respected Downtown NYC artists.

In 2011, Mitch Epstein was awarded the Prix Pictet Photography Prize, and was asked to create a presentation to celebrate the award in Arles, France, in early July. In a Roman amphitheater in the center of Arles, Friedlander and Epstein collaborated on a presentation of music, narration, and photography. The success of the evening led to the creation of this beautiful LP, a special chronicle of their performance in Arles.

Mitch Epstein began work on American Power in 2003. The project was a five-year long, twenty-five state investigation of energy production and consumption in the United States, and how they had become manifest in the country's landscape and culture. The book was published in 2009 (Steidl).

Cellist Erik Friedlander is a composer, an improviser, and a veteran of NYC's downtown scene. His 15 CDs as a leader include his rustically soulful, BoneBridge; The Broken Arm Trio, a trio tribute to jazz bassist Oscar Pettiford, and Block Ice & Propane, his solo cello reinterpretation of American roots music. Friedlander composes music for commercials and movie scores and has appeared on 100s of cds, including work with John Zorn’s Masada, The Mountain Goats, and Courtney Love.

Mitch Epstein's photographs are in numerous major museum collections, including New York's Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Modern in London. Recent solo exhibitions of Epstein's work were at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris (2011), Kunstmuseum Bonn (2011), the Musee de l'Elysee in Lausanne (2011) and Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool (2011).
