In2MedEd and the Office of Continuing Education at Tufts University School of Medicine are jointly sponsoring an Interdisciplinary Management of In-Hospital Hyponatremia multimedia online CME activity at The target audience for this multimedia online CME activity is hospital-based cardiologists, critical care specialists, emergency physicians, endocrinologists, hepatologists, hospitalists and nephrologists.

The faculty of the online hyponatremia CME activity are G. Michael Felker, MD, MHS (Duke Clinical Research Institute), Cynthia Korzelius, MD, MSc, FHM (Newton-Wellesley Hospital; also assistant clinical professor, Tufts University School of Medicine), Robert W. Schrier, MD (University of Colorado School of Medicine), and Joseph Verbalis, MD (Georgetown University Hospital). This activity will take the form of a 60-minute multimedia program available for on-demand learning and will include a combination of branching case-based and didactic learning elements, focusing on challenging management issues. Video-captured faculty will present the multimedia online hyponatremia CME activity overview and patient cases.

The patient cases will be displayed in animation (avatars in hospital settings) and will be interspersed with interactive multiple-choice CME questions, enabling the learners to first assess their CME knowledge base and then review the evidence that supports the best answer. The continuing medical education faculty, utilizing slides, offering clinical pearls, and other appropriate means, will present this immediate feedback.

At the conclusion of this online continuing medical education activity, participants should be able to:

  •     Identify and assess patients at risk of hyponatremia;
  •     Achieve timely and effective diagnosis and management of in-hospital patients with hyponatremia, taking into account the effects of underlying comorbidities and diuretic usage;
  •     Carefully monitor the rate of correction of serum sodium levels in patients with chronic hyponatremia to avoid permanent and potentially fatal neurologic complications;
  •     Balance the potential interactions of one treatment with another to achieve optimal resolution of both the hyponatremia and the underlying disease(s); and
  •     Adhere to a multidisciplinary approach to the management of hyponatremia that provides the patient with continuity of care throughout hospitalization.

The Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) Office of Continuing Education (OCE) was established more than 30 years ago primarily to serve the continuing education needs of Tufts-affiliated physicians. Today, the OCE sponsors, develops and implements continuing education (CE) programming that addresses health care improvements and enhances the professional development of both TUSM-affiliated’ and non-TUSM physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other members of the health care team. In recent years, TUSM OCE became a nationally accredited provider for nurses (American Nurses Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation) and pharmacists (Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education) as well.
