Caleb Havebond’s The Coup Maker joins the ranks of first-rate action thrillers with a scarily believable scenario of covert political violence. Colonel James Carlton, a decorated veteran pilot of the United States Air Force in the Vietnam War, was flying an F-4 Phantom of the 433rd Tactical Wing based in Ubon, Thailand, when he is shot down while on a routine bombing mission. Deep behind enemy lines, trying to survive and find his way back to friendly territory in the ravaged jungles of North Vietnam, he encounters a nightmarish event perpetrated by CIA operatives. It haunts him even after he had survived the war and returned Stateside. Unbeknownst to him, he had witnessed part of an operation by a shadow government that operates within the American nation’s power center. Its tentacles reach out all over the globe to promote a secret program that is no different from the most virulent Nazi operations ever known.
Victor Matine, CIA clandestine operative specialist in Black Bag operations, was the leader of that operation. At twenty-six (when the operation happened), he was known as untouchable within intelligence circles. In an “illustrious” thirty-eight year career, his operations around the world are legend within the Company.
Years pass and their paths cross again. Chicago, in the heat of the war against terrorism ignited by the Al-Qaeda bombing of the World Trade Center: now- Lieutenant James Carlton of the Chicago Police Department and his team of detectives are deputised into a combined Federal operation to head off an Islamic terrorist attack on The Windy City. Victor Matine, now a leader in the rogue shadow organization within American government, is the ops commander of a combined mercenary and Islamic militant group poised to wreak havoc on Chicago. Now, Carlton finally comes face to face with the mystery operator in that tropic night: the almost demonic image has a real name, and has prospered so far into the violent world of black operations as to be a real-life legend. As high-explosive rounds of violence ignite in the fair city, as operatives from both sides join the body count to win the showdown, and as an unbearable crescendo into Byzantine plot and violent countermove is reached, will Carlton be able to kill his ghost of the Vietnam adventure?
