The Publishing Innovation Awards have selected the best comic book app of 2011 this week: The Wormworld Saga by digital publisher Robot Media.

It is the second consecutive time that Robot Media has won a Publishing Innovation Award, receiving its previous award for the mobile comic Robot 13. Other winners of this edition include Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged from Penguin USA and Decoded by Jay-Z from Random House.

The Wormworld Saga is an episodic graphic novel designed for tablet devices, from the mind of acclaimed illustrator Daniel Lieske. Unlike traditional graphic novels, each chapter is digitally painted on a seemingly infinite canvas, providing an immersive reading experience that draws the reader into a fully realized fantasy world.

The Wormworld Saga uses a different format to tell its story, and the app produced by Robot Media complements the story with a novel business model and presentation. The app itself and the main narrative are available to everyone for free, with a paid Collector’s Edition with extras also available. Readers gain insight into the production process with a digital artbook included within, and the author interacts with his audience through an in-app blog and frequent over-the-air updates. The Wormworld Saga is currently available for iPad and will be soon released for Android.

Robot Media’s innovation started at comics and has now expanded to picture books. During the first day of Digital Book World the company announced their new platform Little Robot for creating interactive picture books and comics for iPad, iPhone and Android. The technology is already being used by major publishers worldwide and is now under a closed beta.
