Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) January 31, 2012
The Merk Investments® January 2012 survey of Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs) finds that an increasing share of Investment Advisors are utilizing currencies as a core portfolio allocation.
The survey is based on information from 52 RIAs and intermediaries ranging from $25 million to $4 billion in assets under management. 56% of the advisors consider the Currency Asset Class as part of their Alternatives allocation, up from 47% in the previous year’s survey.
The typical allocation an advisor makes to currencies has remained stable, with 48% of respondents allocating 4-6% of their client’s portfolios to the currency asset class.
“Given the global turmoil, contagion concerns and correlation of traditional asset classes, advisors are increasingly discovering currencies as they seek un-correlated returns and down-side protection,” explains Axel Merk, president and chief investment officer at Merk Investments.
Merk’s Director of Distribution, Emily Meyer adds another factor: “Currency funds may be considered special cases of international bond funds, as they tend to focus on currency risk while seeking to mitigate interest and credit risk. This resonates well with sophisticated investors, especially given the current environment.”
Merk Investments, LLC is the manager of the Merk Funds, a suite of no-load actively managed currency mutual funds. The firm’s flagship fund, the Merk Hard Currency Fund® (MERKX) was highlighted by Smart Money Magazine’s January 2012 issue as one of the “Top 100 Mutual Funds” based on 5-year results as reported by Morningstar.
Merk is the only mutual fund company focusing exclusively on currencies. Merk White Papers and other primary research on the currency asset class can be found at http://www.merkfunds.com.
