The number of bankruptcy case filings rose in the state’s Western District, but the number of filings statewide during 2011 dropped slightly as compared to 2010.

The statistics regarding these bankruptcy cases reveal that the number of filings rose in the Western District of Oklahoma during 2011, but the number of bankruptcy case filings overall dropped slightly when compared to 2010.

These statistics, which are tracked and which were released by the American Bankruptcy Institute, or ABI, reveal that the number of bankruptcy filings initiated in the Western District of Oklahoma, which includes Oklahoma City, rose by more than 10 percent from 2010 to 2011 to a total of 7,749 filings. Overall, the number of bankruptcy filings in Oklahoma statewide stood at 13,479, which represents a 2.2 percent drop in filings during 2011 when compared to 2010.

These Oklahoma bankruptcy statistics relate to bankruptcy cases that were filed under any chapter of the United States Bankruptcy Code, and common chapters that govern bankruptcy filings include Chapter 7, Chapter 11 and Chapter 13. The slight statewide decrease in the number of Oklahoma bankruptcy filings represents the first overall decrease in these filings in five years, as the previous four years revealed consecutive increases in the number of cases opened according to the American Bankruptcy Institute. The recent high point for Oklahoma bankruptcy cases filed occurred in 2005, when nearly 40,000 cases were opened in the state.
