Social Fundraising Campaign Taps Fundly, Facebook, and Twitter to Send Father with Terminal Cancer and Three Sons to Disneyland, reports Fundly

"I’m delighted with the outpouring of love and support for this effort,” said Mills. “It’s amazing that an online community can work together so quickly to fulfill a family’s dream."

In a month of New Year’s resolutions, a Portland area woman is resolving to raise the funds necessary to fulfill the last wish of a father dying of terminal brain cancer: to take his three sons on one final family trip to Disneyland.

When Vancouver, Washington resident Crystal Mills learned through a friend about Dustin Hughes, a Portland, OR husband and father of three who had been diagnosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme – an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer – and whose last wish was to take his three sons to Disneyland, she felt compelled to help.

Although she had never met Hughes, Mills contacted him through Facebook and was so moved by his plight that she immediately launched an online fundraising drive to fund his dream trip to Disneyland on Fundly, the world’s largest social fundraising platform.

Using Fundly’s easy to use and quick to set up platform to share Hughes’ story among her Facebook and Twitter networks and request contributions, Mills’ “Operation Hughes” campaign has already raised $6,547 and is more than halfway towards its $10,000 fundraising goal.

"I’m delighted with the outpouring of love and support for this effort,” said Mills. “It’s amazing that an online community can work together so quickly to fulfill a family’s dream."

In addition to fundraising for Hughes’ family trip, Mills is also determined to advance another one of Hughes’ dreams – to start a charitable foundation to help those who have been diagnosed with brain cancer.

“Words cannot express how much I appreciate everyone who has offered their moral and financial support to me and my family. This online campaign is a tremendous source of inspiration and a real teachable moment for my sons,” said Hughes.

“Fundly is deeply moved by this outpouring of generosity and support from individuals who have never even met the family to whom they are donating,” said Fundly CEO, Dave Boyce.” We are humbled by the powerful combination of social media and human compassion to help our friends and family, as well as strangers, in need.”
