New Doctors Join The Ranks of The Center for Medical Weight Loss Network

Fifteen physicians have just completed the latest round of intensive initial training for adding The Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) non-surgical program to their main medical practices. The doctors, located throughout the United States, join the more than 750 physicians who have received CMWL training in the last six years.

The doctors’ training comes just as Medicare and more private insurers are introducing new policies to cover counseling for obese patients, whose BMI is 30 or higher. The new coverage offers favorable rates to physicians practicing non-surgical medical weight loss, but only if patients show positive outcomes. In order to produce these kinds of results, and because weight loss is not an area typically taught in medical school, physicians understand that they need additional training.

Dr. Michael Kaplan, CMWL’s founder and Chief Medical Officer, personally leads the initial training for all new physicians joining the network, as well as ongoing CME and one-on-one training. “I’m thrilled to see more doctors recognizing that obesity and overweight need to be treated as medical conditions, just like any other chronic disease. By adding this new area of expertise to their existing practices, they are rewarded in many ways, the most important of which is that they are helping patients get off of their medications and lead healthier lives.”

The fifteen newly trained physicians plan to integrate the CMWL programs into their independent medical practices in the near future. All of the new physicians are also participating as research centers for the current CMWL obesity trial that is using evidenced-based practices to determine the best methods to obtain long-term weight loss in all patients treated.

The Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) clinically-proven, evidence-based programs provide an approach to long-term weight loss and maintenance under the care and support of trained physicians. Each fully individualized program is customized to the patient, taking into account his or her medical history, body composition, and personal goals. This individual care is supported with on-going one-on-one counseling by the physician on important topics including nutrition, fitness, behavioral modification, motivation, and, where necessary, prescribed medications. Physicians in The Center for Medical Weight Loss network are all medical professionals specially trained in non-surgical bariatric medicine who have access to the latest techniques and medical data, including high-quality nutritional products and FDA-approved weight loss medications only available to medical doctors.
