UK Senior Hospital Consultants assist in the launch of first ever ‘search for specialist by diagnosis’ website

The new Consultant-Search website is the first site with an inbuilt ‘search for specialist by diagnosis’ function that helps patients choose from a list of appropriate leading medical specialists. When a patient receives a diagnosis they, their families and friends, are rightly expected to get involved in making decisions over suitable treatments and specialists. Naturally, a patient’s own doctor is there to help, but without access to the same level of information that doctors get; what input can patients really have?

Getting a diagnosis is a stressful time not just for the patient, but also for friends and family. This is a time when patients need fast access to reliable consultant-led information.

Making ‘patient choice’ a reality … it starts with the ‘diagnosis’.
When a patient receives a diagnosis they, their families and friends, are rightly expected to get involved in making decisions over suitable treatments and specialists. Naturally, a patient’s own doctor is there to help, but without access to the same level of information that doctors get; what input can patients really have?

What is Consultant-Search?
The new Consultant-Search website is the first site with an inbuilt ‘search for specialist by diagnosis’ function that helps patients choose from a list of appropriate leading medical specialists. In many cases, the consultants have also prepared informative articles that are published on a sister website, totalhealth, which explain the latest evidence-based treatment options in plain English. Often the first thing a person will do on receiving a diagnosis is “Google it”. Consultant-Search meets the need generated by this head-on.

Mr Daryll Baker, Consultant-Search Medical Director and Vascular Surgeon, says: “Getting a diagnosis is a stressful time not just for the patient, but also for friends and family. This is a time when patients need fast access to reliable consultant-led information.”

The internet can provide a wealth of information; however, its unregulated nature allows anyone to post to sites and blogs – often with varying quality and accuracy. Most people expect medical information to be independent and trustworthy, but often this is sadly not the case. Without having access to professional sites and the ability to wade through the normal medical jargon, patients have difficulty accessing the same information that doctors get. In response to the need for trustworthy, authoritative patient information, Consultant-Search and sister site totalhealth, are written by senior doctors in plain English.

It starts with the diagnosis
The first piece of information that patients want to learn more about is the nature of the illness followed by information on the latest treatment options and which specialists might be appropriate. The patient diagnosis-driven Consultant-Search site is therefore a good and authoritative place to start in order to get information on the following:

1.What is the latest thinking about this diagnosis?
2.What are the treatment options?
3.Who are the appropriate doctors?

The speed at which medicine is advancing, along with the rapidly expanding array of treatment options ranging from lasers, embolisation or targeted radiotherapy, means that patients are anxious to ensure that they explore all available options along with knowing who the acknowledged experts are and who perform these procedures.
The ever-expanding diagnostic search function on Consultant-Search has over 1,500 consultant-defined diagnoses that are linked to a choice of specialists. This means that the patient will immediately find an appropriate choice of specialists. The subsequent degree of site functionality and expert links means that the patient, family or friends can ask questions, seek further information and request consultations. These are the initial steps towards making an informed choice and playing an active role in making vital medical decisions.

Consultant-led for patients
Each consultant on Consultant-Search takes direct responsibility for monitoring and updating the diagnoses that they are responsible for treating. Although the diagnosis might be in medical terms, such as ‘acute or chronic otitis media’, the search will also include the common lay terms such as ‘ear infection’ or ‘earache’.
