Many elementary and middle school children aren’t learning math like their parents did. Schools across the country are increasingly supplementing traditional classroom instruction with gaming environments like Math-Whizz, an online math tutor created by Whizz Education.

Every day thousands of students log into Math-Whizz and they are instantly transported to a whimsical world crawling with animated creatures to participate in interactive math lessons at their own pace. As they progress through the personalized curriculum, they earn credits to challenge other math students from around the world and to stock their Math-Whizz bedrooms with digital toys, pets, plants and more.

“Parents often tell us that they were never fond of math, but that their children love it,” said Judd, Vice President of Whizz Education and a former math teacher and Curriculum Director. “We attribute this growing divide between parents and children on the subject of math to technology. It’s hard to fear math when the lessons are so much fun, matched to your unique skill level and your teachers and parents are supporting you along the way.”

Ironically, the same technology that is dividing parents and children on the subject of math is also uniting them. Schools alert parents to their children’s performance through the Math-Whizz platform and provide them with opportunities to cheer their children on. Parents receive routine emails that detail the areas where their children are struggling and excelling. In turn, parents send their children encouraging messages and print certificates of achievement for them.

According to Judd, sometimes he hears parents say things like “I’m not good with numbers” or “I didn’t get the math gene.” Without meaning to, parents could cause their children to question their innate math ability. He feels that right now we have the opportunity to cultivate a crop of students who associate math with fun. Parents can support the cause by making positive comments about math and validating its importance.
