We’re going to work hard to set some new records in 2012.

Aura Laser Skin Care announced today that 2011 went down as the biggest year in the clinic’s history, with new records set for number of patients treated and number of successful treatments.

All told, Aura Laser – which operates facilities in the Bothell and Kirkland neighborhoods of the Seattle Metropolitan Area – saw over 10,000 patients last year, more than doubling its business for 2010, according to co-owner and lead medical aesthetician Katy Issa.

“The business has been around for a while now, and we’ve made quite a name for ourselves,” said Katy Issa, who earned a pre-nursing associate’s degree at Bellevue Community College and attended Lee’s International Academy of Aesthetics and Skin. “We’re quite well-versed in what we do. Our prices are unmatched, and we get a lot of referrals – many patients tell their family members and friends about the excellent work we do.”

One reason for the high number of referrals and Aura Laser Skin Cares rampant success is the clinic’s focus on dark-skinned patients. Aura Laser offers aesthetic and anti-aging treatments for all skin types, of course, but is one of very few skin-care clinics in the country – and the only in the Seattle area, according to Katy Issa – to service ethnic skin types.

“Providing these services has always been a unique challenge when it comes to darker skin,” noted Katy Issa. “Lasers like to burn dark skin, because they’re attracted to color. When a laser is used for hair removal, for instance, it actually looks for the color in the hair. But a laser isn’t human, and if it sees darkness in the skin, it’s going to target that instead.”

“Many dark-skinned people have hyper-pigmentation and other serious skin-care issues, including hair removal,” added Issa, a dark-skinned Iranian-Russian who tested many Aura Laser Skin Care procedures on herself to make sure they were safe for patients, including laser treatments and chemical peels.

“I learned quite a bit,” Katy Issa said. “Dark skin can tolerate a lot more than what was perceived by dermatologists and plastic surgeons. But it takes a highly trained technician to render these treatments safe and, at the same time, keep them effective.”

Also aiding Aura Laser Skin Care’s impressive business gains are larger numbers of male patients seeking skin-care services. “When we opened the clinic in 2005, we might have seen one or two guys,” Katy Issa said. “Now, about 20 percent of our patients are male.”

To that end, Aura Laser Skin Care has begun featuring products specifically targeted to men – scent-free lotions, for instance – and is engaging special training protocols “so my staff can communicate properly with men,” Katy Issa said, “insofar as their medical needs and desires.”

“We can make anyone feel comfortable,” she added, “once they come in and experience our straightforward manner and see that we can relate to their condition or situation.”

That level of customer service is standard at Aura Laser. Katy Issa personally, along with the clinic’s physician, consults on every treatment plan and remains available to the clinic’s patients at all times via Twitter and other live-chat connections, keeping up-to-date on their progress and answering questions. But Aura Laser Skin Care’s biggest draw, the co-owner noted, is its amazing line of products and services.

Among those state-of-the-art services: laser hair removal, Botox® cosmetic treatments, vein therapy, SmartLipo™ laser lipolysis, Body-Jet® water assisted liposuction, microdermabrasion and the new Fractional CO2 laser, widely considered the most effective weapon in the world for combating wrinkles, aging skin, acne scars and other skin imperfections.

“The Fractional CO2 is proving to be very popular,” Katy Issa said. “It’s amazing what this can do for conditions like acne scarring. We’ve had some rave reviews. We just introduced the service at the end of November, and we’ve already used it on 500 to 600 patients. It’s been amazing.”

With a recently bolstered staff of a Physician Medical Director, six Medical Aestheticians, two Medical Assistants and a slate of new product offerings on the horizon, Aura Laser Skin Care is preparing for another big year, according to Katy Issa, who operates the clinic with her husband, former Microsoft software engineer Nader Issa.

“We’ve been blessed to grow our business the way we have,” Katy Issa said. “But we’re not sitting back and resting on our laurels. Along with our dedicated and skilled staff, we’re going to work hard to set some new records in 2012.”
