Traditionally this event, at its previous location, has drawn many of today’s top ranked players as they prepare for the Sony Ericsson Open in Florida the following week
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 30, 2012
Tournament officials of the Dallas Tennis Classic, a new stop on the ATP Challenger Tour, announced today that the inaugural event will begin March 12 and run through March 18 at the prestigious Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. The tournament also announced that ticket sales for the event will begin on Wednesday, February 1, through the tournament’s website at DallasTennisClassic.com.
The event, which has traditionally been played in Florida, was moved to Dallas after the tournament became available from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
“We are very pleased that the Dallas Tennis Classic has chosen to play their event in Irving,” said Beth Van Duyne, Irving Mayor. The Four Seasons Resort and Club is a perfect venue for this type of international tennis event, and I’m sure it will impress all who travel to our city to witness these great players compete in this inaugural tournament.”
The Dallas Tennis Classic is a Challenger level tour event with prize money of $125,000. The event will feature a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw. Unlike other Challenger events, top 50 ranked players can play in the Dallas Tennis Classic, without obtaining a wildcard, as they prepare for the Sony Ericsson Open tournament.
“We believe that adding another professional tennis event in the Metroplex is great for the tennis fan base in North Texas and helps showcase our great community to the international tennis audience,” said Zoltan Papp, Dallas Tennis Classic tournament director. “Traditionally this event, at its previous location, has drawn many of today’s top ranked players as they prepare for the Sony Ericsson Open in Florida the following week. We hope to continue that tradition by bringing many of the top 50 players in the world to this year’s event.”
Well known players who have competed in this event, when it was held in its previous location, include Juan Martin del Potro (ARG), Gael Monfils (FRA), Robin Soderling (SWE), Fernando Gonzalez (CHI), Thomas Berdych (CZE), Ivo Karlovic (CRO), Gustavo Kuerten (BRA), Gilles Simon (FRA), Todd Martin (USA) and Thomas Enqvist (SWE).
From its meager beginnings in 1978, the ATP Challenger Tour calendar now consists of a worldwide circuit of over 170 events in more than 50 countries with prize money in 2010 reaching $10 million.
Tickets for the Dallas Tennis Classic will go on sale on Wednesday, February 1. For more information, visit the tournament’s website at DallasTennisClassic.com.
