The Marzano Causal Teacher Evaluation Model has been selected by the Oklahoma State Department of Education as part of a statewide effort to improve student learning. Based on studies conducted in classrooms across the nation that correlate instructional strategies to student achievement, the Marzano Causal Model is also grounded on experimental/control studies that establish a direct causal link between elements of the model and student results. On-site classroom studies have indicated an average 16 percentile point gain in student achievement when teachers employed strategies within the Marzano Causal Model. Strong correlations have also been demonstrated with student reading and math scores.
Model Exceeds Standards
An analysis conducted by Oklahoma’s Teacher and Leadership Effectiveness Evaluation Commission (TLE) determined the Marzano Causal Model to meet and exceed established Oklahoma state selection criteria. The TLE Commission chose the Marzano Causal Model from a field of six frameworks, as one of three approved teacher evaluation models. A survey disseminated to teachers, principals, and district administrators, overwhelmingly favored the Marzano Causal Model as the default state model.
The move to overhaul Oklahoma teacher evaluations follows the passage of Senate Bill 2033, the Oklahoma Teacher and Leader Effectiveness Act of 2010. At a December 15, 2011 meeting, after months of careful study, the state school board voted to allow individual districts to freely choose from among three models for the 2012 pilot year: Tulsa Public Schools, the Marzano Causal Teacher Evaluation Model, and the Danielson Framework for Teaching.
The Teacher and Leadership Effectiveness Evaluation System (TLE) for teachers and leaders is designed to encourage continuous professional growth leading toward improved student achievement for all Oklahoma students. According to state law, all local board of education evaluation policies must align with the TLE by the 2013-2014 school year.
At Douglass Middle High School in Oklahoma City, school principal Dr. Brian Staples says the school has successfully used the Marzano Causal Teacher Evaluation Model for three years. “[The Marzano Model] provides teachers with specific feedback to improve the quality of their teaching,” Staples says. “We know that’s the single most important factor when it comes to student achievement. The whole [Marzano Causal Model] is really focused on teacher improvement and development.”
In 2011, The Marzano Causal Teacher Evaluation Model was also selected by the Florida Department of Education to implement a statewide Teacher Evaluation System.
