Although more common, plastic surgery is still a very important decision. All major certification boards recommend consulting with multiple surgeons to be sure to find the one best suited to performing your procedure. However, the consultation charge of many plastic surgeons can be a barrier to people with limited means.

To ensure that every patient will be able to have a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Vasdev Rai of the Cosmetic Surgical Center is now offering free consultations. Dr. Rai explains, "The plastic surgery industry has changed greatly in recent years. The number of practices offering cosmetic procedures without proper board certification seems to be going up, and these practices often offer free consultations. Free consultations are a powerful incentive for someone who has had to work hard to save enough for their plastic surgery procedure. These people need to be able to talk to at least one board certified plastic surgeon so they understand the difference."

Dr. Rai's concern is supported by recent research. A 2010 study of liposuction practitioners in the Los Angeles area published in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery showed that 40% of them were not board-certified plastic surgeons.

As part of the campaign to increase patient information, Dr. Rai will also send potential patients an informative email: "10 Things You Must Know before Choosing Your Plastic Surgeon."
