Commemorative bottles of brew invite the public to vote with their taste buds in the presidential primaries and general election

The Republican label design for the Presidential Alection 2012 primary season at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company

The Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, long known for its passion for politics, handcrafted beer and great coastal cuisine, has unveiled two commemorative bottle labels for its second “Presidential Alection,” helping to lubricate the country’s ongoing debate about the best Republican for the job and honoring the current Commander-in-Chief.

Will the Republican nominee for 2012 be Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum or Ron Paul? With the ongoing Republican primaries making it anyone’s guess as to the eventual candidate, the red Alection bottle label features a blank white silhouette with a big question mark where the future nominee’s portrait will be placed, with the words, “Your Republican candidate here.” The Democrat Alection label features a smiling President Barack Obama against a blue backdrop. The final Republican bottle label will be unveiled on June 6, the day after the California primary.

The special, limited-release bottles of the Brewing Company’s popular Pillar Point Ale are available for purchase by the bottle or the case at the Brewing Company ($4.50/bottle) and at select Bay Area retailers starting today. A traditional English-style Pale Ale that is well-hopped and nutty (not unlike the current battle for the Republican seat), Pillar Point Ale is created by Brewmaster Kirk Hillyard with English Maris Otter malt and East Kent Goldings hops. Approximate abv. 4.8%; available year-round.

Visitors to the Brewing Company will “cast their vote” for who they believe should or will win the presidential primaries and/or general election by simply ordering the Alection beer of their choice and asking their server for a ballot. The results of the Alection primaries will be announced on June 6 on the Brewing Company’s website and its Facebook page.

In the 2008 Alection, the Brewing Company’s “Obama Ale” beat the “McCain Ale” by four-to-one and ultimately predicted the eventual real-life champion. Will the beer-drinking patrons of the Half Moon Bay Brewery be able to repeat the national sentiment for the Republican primaries? Only time will tell.

Both of these collectable bottles will also be available for sale at this month’s “Brews & Views,” the Brewing Company’s regular speakers series that tackles public issues, at the Mavericks’ Event Center (107 Broadway Ave., Half Moon Bay), on Thursday evening, Feb. 2, from 6-8 p.m. The topic of discussion is “The Power of Deliberative Polling,” with special guests James Fishkin of the Center of Deliberative Diplomacy at Stanford University and Zabrae Valentine of California Forward, with moderator Lenny Mendonca, Director of McKinsey & Company and founder of the Brewing Company. Deliberative Polling®, developed by Dr. Fishkin, is a practice of public consultation that employs random samples of the citizenry to explore how opinions would change if they were more informed. Admission is free.
