New technology is helping Globe University track student learning and improve outcomes.

Globe University and affiliate schools Minnesota School of Business and Broadview University announced today that they will begin using a powerful student assessment software package from eLumen Collaborative. Globe University joins more than 30 four-year institutions and community and technical colleges across the country to deploy the new software, which follows and measures student learning outcomes.

The software will help Globe University track actual student learning, assess programs and help meet its strict accreditation requirements. eLumen is unique because it “focuses on student learning outcomes as its unit of measurement,” according to eLumen’s founder and chief visionary, Dr. David Shupe. What this means is within the eLumen system there is less emphasis on grades and more emphasis on what the student actually knows and is able to do.

This shift in the tectonic plates underlying how colleges evaluate student performance is partially driven by the need to improve college graduation rates as well as the job placement rates of those graduates. That’s why Globe’s Director of Institutional Effectiveness, Dr. Mitch Peterson, is intrigued by the innovative system. “We see eLumen as an opportunity to help our students by closely following their progress over time with the goal of observing how they perform against program learning outcomes, while also improving retention,” said Dr. Peterson.

“Documenting student performance across a set of learning outcomes for a particular program helps us to provide employers the peace-of-mind that our students possess the necessary knowledge and skills for success in a given career field.”

Globe University and its affiliate schools are continually in search of new technologies that could help improve the quality of its academic programs and the learning outcomes for its thousands of students.

Summarized Shupe, “We have achieved what no one else even thought possible. That is, to enable a college or university to know where any student, or any set of students, stands in real time relative to the expected student learning outcomes for graduates of an academic program.”
