Psychologists answer “How do I motivate people?” with an App

This week saw the release of Motivate, an App for iPhone and iPad, which claims to help people motivate individuals they know by allowing them use of simple, automated, psychological profiling techniques. Leadership psychologists from Wise Leader™ (http://www.wiseleadergroup.com), a UK based leadership development organisation, designed the app to give people a practical tool they can pick up use without waiting for a training course.

Motivate puts psychology in the hands of leaders.

(PRWEB UK) 12 October 2012

Terry Sexton, leadership psychologist and MD of Wise Leader™, says “as psychologists we are used to going in to businesses and coaching people in motivation skills. However, with the global economic crisis organisations have slashed their people development budgets. People are no longer receiving the tools they need to work effectively.”

“Within new technologies, such as Apps, there is a fantastic opportunity for us, as psychologists, to design and deliver these important tools directly into the hands of people who need them. Motivate is one in a series of Apps we have designed since speaking to leaders and managers to find out what they need right now.”

The App works by asking users to answer a series of questions about the person they know and want to motivate. It then generates a short report, based on the motivational drivers they display, describing how best to motivate them and what to avoid. For instance, someone who is motivated by Affiliation enjoys team work and personal, rather than impersonal, communication.

This novel use of technology reflects a new era in organisational training where people are able to choose their own development, rather than waiting for their employers to find sufficient time and resources to deliver something that may not be relevant. In survey carried out by the CIPD in the UK 78% of public sector managers said they had less money to spend on training budgets in 2011 than the previous year and the same percentage believed this budget would fall further in 2012. With budgets falling, but business itself becoming more complex, volatile and uncertain, surely now is the time to start logging on, booting up and downloading the tools we need to be successful now and in the future?
