Spartan Race, an obstacle racing event, releases a statement regarding their Spartan World Championship, an intense obstacle race that drew in over 6,000 competitors.

On October 15th, Spartan Race releases a statement regarding their intense Spartan World Championship of 2012, an Obstacle Course Race (OCR) that requires athleticism, endurance, and power, in Killington, VT.

According to Spartan, approximately 6,000 competitors and spectators from across the globe celebrated the intense Spartan World Championship that took place along the wooded grounds of Killington. Despite varying degrees of athleticism, the obstacle race was a demanding challenge for all. The Spartan World Championship included the Beast course, which consists of a challenging 14 mile loop, as well as an intense Ultra Beast, which was ultimately nearly 30miles of obstacle course. The additional challenges in this year’s race, from more mileage to heightened elevation, can be accredited to Race director Mike Morris, Course Builder Russel Cohen and a talented build staff and crew.

According to Spartan representative Carrie Adams, “Some fan favorites like the mogul sandbag carry were on tap and the mentally challenging memorization element that has racers memorize a unique code and recite it over five miles later when quizzed by a volunteer. It’s a frustrating task for weary and cold competitors. Sled drags, multiple barb wire low crawls, two rope climbs, and over 25 other obstacles challenged competitors all day.” After three long hours, the first racer emerged from the tree-lined course. Hobie Call was victorious as the first male competitor to complete the Spartan Championship. As for female racers, Claude Godbout not only took the top spot but also rushed past six male competitors on the course. The top finishers were rewarded from a $50,000 prize, the biggest award for any Obstacle Course Racing event.

Spartan Race not only commends the competitors, but the hardworking volunteers as well who had made the Championship possible. In addition, Spartan Race offers gratitude to Killington and surrounding towns for their incredible hospitality. Finally, Spartan Race is appreciative for the support of sponsors Gaspari, Air National Guard, Dial for Men, Inov8 and Geigerrig.
