On October 16th, obstacle racing event Spartan Race announced the success of their original new event, one that was “the first of its kind in the world,” which took place at the Spartan World Championships in Killington, VT.
Spartan Race introduced the concept for their new event in May 2012, regarding it as an original and unique new event. According to Spartan Race representative Carrie Adams, the race “would be a marathon(ish) distance held in the Green Mountains of Vermont the same weekend as our World Championships. Two loops on the course, almost fully self-supported, and imposed with time cut-offs and rules for obstacle completion.” After this announcement Spartan Race conducted an application process, finally choosing 321 competitors out of thousands for the nearly 30 mile Ultra Beast capping off a hugely successful Spartan World Championship.
The Spartan World Championship event consisted of the highest cash prizes ever given at any obstacle racing event. According to Carrie Adams, “$5,000 was up for grabs for the winner of the single loop – our original Beast as well as the double loop Ultra Beast for both male and female top finishers, $2,000 would go to second place finishers and $1,000 for third place finishers. On the day [of the event], $50,000 was handed out in cash prizes. Other awards were also presented, making it the highest payday for any single obstacle race ever held.”
According to Spartan Race, 162 competitors completed the demanding obstacle race. The top spot for male competitor went to Cody Moat, a racer who completed first in both the Beast and the Ultra Beast. As for female competitors, Claude Godbout took first in both races. In addition to cash prizes, finishers received Ultra Beast medals, specialty made prizes for racers in this unique event. Adams explains these medals are larger and are complete with glow-in-the-dark ribbons. “Had to be unique for such a unique race.” Says Adams. Spartan Race commends the incredible athleticism of all who competed in the Spartan World Championship.
