Family physicians Dr. Sandra Fahmy and Dr. Jennifer Turkish and special guests school nurse Maryann Ciesla and first grade teacher Carol Macken of Lincoln School in West Caldwell joined host Abe Kasbo on Sunday, October 7th at 10 p.m. on WOR’s HealthNavigator, a health and wellness show dedicated to an hour of healthcare and better living.
As a family and internal medicine physician at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Dr. Sandra Fahmy provides medical insight on how to prepare for the cold season and strengthen your immune system Dr. Fahmy examined the symptoms and treatments for whooping cough. She discussed the benefits of getting your vitamins from your food rather than taking a multivitamin supplement.
Dr. Jennifer Turkish, a family and internal medicine physician at Raritan Bay Medical Center, gave examples for good hand washing techniques for children. She gave great insight on the facts and myths about the flu. Dr. Turkish discussed who should be getting the flu vaccine and why.
Maryann Ciesla and Carol Macken from Caldwell/West Caldwell School District and in particular Lincoln School in West Caldwell discussed the importance of sleep and nutrition for children as an integral part of ensuring that students are ready to learn. First grade teacher Carol Macken delved into several reasons children are not getting a good night's rest, including watching too much television and provided some strategies for parents to modify that behavior. School nurse Maryann Ciesla discussed the effects on children when they don’t get the recommended number of hours of sleep. Both Ciesla and Macken also discussed how community partnerships have been instrumental in bringing local nutrition education to their school.
