People don’t realize they’re entitled to compensation after an accident.

When police responded to a noise complaint Tuesday, they may have expected to find kids partying or a stereo turned up too loud. According to ABC News, as they entered the parking deck of the apartment complex where Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown lives, they found a car registered to her rumored boyfriend—which had clearly been in an accident and somehow driven back. To the founders of Houston Accident Attorneys, a group that helps make legal counsel accessible to accident victims, the mystery is a sign of a dangerous trend.

“People don’t realize they’re entitled to compensation after an accident,” said Jennifer Fletcher, spokesperson for Houston Accident Attorneys, “There’s this idea that you want to get away without getting the police involved. But often that’s the very worst thing you can do.”

The car, a 2012 Chevy Camero, was backed into a parking spot but showed extensive front end damage, with the air bags deployed and the emergency flashers activated reported ABC News. It was registered to Nick Gordon, who had been taken into the Houston household at age 12 and is now rumored to be dating Brown. Police could not verify that any accident had ever been reported.

“Whether you’re at fault or the victim, the wisest thing to do is talk to the police and then to a lawyer,” Fletcher said. “It can be intimidating, but we make it as accessible as possible. Our whole mission is to put people in touch, for free, with attorneys who can actually help them.”

So far no one has come forward as the other party in Gordon’s car accident, and no suit has been filed.

“There’s a lot of compensation available to anyone injured in a car accident,” Fletcher said. “It will never hurt to talk to a lawyer about your options. It might even completely change things.”

Houston Accident Attorneys also helps victims of workplace injuries and other accidents.
