A nationally recognized exhibition of iconic photos of the West taken over a span of 125 years, “National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West” opens October 27, 2012 at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyo., where it will continue on display through April 28, 2013. The Wyoming Inn of Jackson Hole, which features its own collection of dramatic Western photography by Thomas Mangelsen, makes a great home base for photography lovers interested in visiting the exhibition.

Planned events in Jackson Hole around the National Museum of Wildlife Art opening of the exhibition include a “Sneak Peek” with museum President and CEO James C. McNutt, who was instrumental in the creation of the 10-museum exhibition and book, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October 26. Special activities for museum visitors around the subjects of photography and media also will be available on the opening day of the exhibition, October 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including Polaroid cameras on loan for taking instant photos along the museum’s Sculpture Trail, the opportunity to hang personal American West photographs in an impromptu “pop-up exhibition,” and instruction on how to upload images to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for social media sharing.
