New Technology Facilitates Learning Experience and Supports Students Balancing Work and Education

Ultimate Medical Academy (UMA) continues to prioritize student success by enhancing the technology and services they offer to support their students.

"We have recently launched several new technologies and programs that provide increased support to our students, including Blackboard Collaborate, SOAR (Student Outreach, Assistance, Resources) and Starfish Retention Solutions. Together, these tools help more of our students cross the finish line, prepared to enter the workforce with in-demand skills. These technology and service offerings better enable UMA to positively impact lives through education."

Blackboard Collaborate brings more of the experience of an actual classroom to online learning by offering an enhanced level of interaction between students and instructors. Students can watch the instructor teaching via a web conferencing tool with two-way audio and live chat features. Collaborate offers various channels of interaction through a collaboration window featuring a shared white board, screen sharing or Web sharing. Instructors can also utilize the new mulit-user virtual white board during their lessons. Collaborate enables interactive chat that automatically populates the user's contacts list with classmates, instructors and even study group members. Students can choose from voice, video, or traditional text chat messaging. These new features help the students feel like they're participating in a classroom-style lesson, while experiencing the convenience and flexibility of online education from their homes.

SOAR was recently launched to UMA's students and their family members. The program offers unlimited access to counselors, life coaches, financial experts and work specialists to assist in solving life problems while in school. UMA students and family members may speak with professional counselors for a variety of personal issues by phone to receive help 24/7, 365 days a year with any concern or problem affecting behavioral health or well-being. The program is offered at no cost to students and their families.

Starfish Retention Solutions is currently in the pilot stage at UMA. This program specializes in providing resources to help students achieve their goals by setting up performance alerts and facilitating better communication between students, faculty and advisors. The system tracks attendance and automatically identifies any attendance issues. It also tracks classroom performance, grades and includes an appointment-setting tool to facilitate communication between students and their professors.
