Football is a huge sporting event in the US, whether it is at the collegiate or in professional level. Football is more exciting if there is something fueling it – rivalry. In collegiate football, there is the so-called “The Game” – this is the heated college football rivalry between two powerhouses in this sport event, the Ohio State University and University of Michigan.
In fact, sport media ESPN ranked the game between the football team of Ohio State Buckeyes and University of Michigan Wolverines as one of the greatest sports rivalry in North America. The rivalry started way back in 1897 in which the Wolverines drubbed the Buckeyes with a whooping 34 to 0 in scoring. Since college football has just begun this 2012, it is nice to relieve the past of these two college football teams. Overall, these two have played 108 games in which the series record is 58 to 43 in favor of the Michigan with 6 ties. In the 2011 edition of “The Game”, the Wolverines came on top again with a close game – 40 to 34 in scoring.
Both teams are from the Big Ten Conference. With so much success, the games of these two teams are always held at the end of college football regular season since 1935. The stadium in which these two teams played are alternate between the “home courts” of the team in Columbus, Ohio and Ann Harbor, Michigan and this started in 1918.
The early years of the rivalry has seen the Wolverines winning in the more than a decade. In fact, in the first 14 years, the Wolverine won 12 times with the 2 coming off ties. The largest victory came in the 1902 edition in which the Wolverines literally trashed the Buckeyes with an imposing 86 – 0 score. Their participation in the Big Ten Conference made the rivalry more interesting. The first meeting of these two teams in the conference was again a win for the Wolverines. It was in 1919 that the Buckeyes captured their first win again Michigan.
National titles wise, the Michigan garnered total of 11 titles against 7 for Ohio State, while the Ohio state appeared in a total of 43 games compared to 41 for Michigan. In their conference, the Michigan has won 42 titles against 34 of the Ohio State.
It’s still too early to tell who’s going to win so keep watching.
