Intelligent Decisions (ID), Inc., a recognized leader in federal IT solutions, proudly announced today that the company’s new health and wellness focused mobile app was awarded second place in the prestigious national “Blue Button Mash Up Challenge” sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information. The goal of the challenge was to catalyze public and private organizations to make it easier for individuals to access their personal health information online, and to encourage consumers to use that information to improve their health.
ID placed second among a total of 17 entrants from around the country with an innovative app that centralizes and transforms patients’ raw data to provide an organized, simple picture of their health. The new app is part of ID’s larger mobility practice designed to deliver intuitive, consumer-centered, and mission-focused mobile solutions.

The Blue Button Mash Up Challenge’s core focus was meeting a “three part aim” that entrants were judged on. The three areas were: 1. Better health care by improving all aspects of patient care; 2. Better health by encouraging healthier lifestyles in the entire population; and, 3. Lower costs through improvement by promoting preventative medicine, improved coordination of health care services, and by reducing waste and inefficiencies.
This competition was focused on empowering individuals to be partners in their health through health information technology, or health IT. The Blue Button initiative is the result of the vision of President Barack Obama, U.S. Federal Chief Technology Officer Todd Park, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Chief Technology Officer Peter Levin. The initiative utilizes the principles of open data and leverages the private sector to help solve challenges in the nation’s healthcare system.
The Blue Button appears on the patient portals of more than one third of America’s hospitals and those of nearly one third of practicing physicians. Specifically, a patient can click on the Blue Button on a website or mobile device and download their health data from a personal health record or from the patient portal of their doctor, hospital or clinical laboratory. The data helps patients better understand their medical histories and treatment, ask more informed questions, and take control of their health. The VA recently recorded its millionth patient registration for downloading a Blue Button health record.
Developers, designers, patients, providers, health care organizations, and anyone else interested in health care were invited to take part in the nationwide Blue Button Mash Up Challenge. San Diego based Humetrix was the first place winner of the competition and received $45,000. ID was awarded $20,000 as the second place winner.
ID’s next steps for its health and wellness focused app include the integration of additional providers to support more patients, and the launch of the app on the Apple App Store in early 2013.
